As part of the release of Lukas Grevis’ new film, Apples and Pears (Äppel A Bieren), we are delighted to invite you to a special screening in the presence of the director, followed by a Q&A session.
Lukas Grevis is originally from the Minett, the industrial region of Luxembourg’s „Terres Rouges“, located in the former mining basin in the south of the country. Having directed numerous short films, music videos and series, Äppel A Bieren is the Luxembourgish filmmaker’s second feature film, following Land am Shiet, a social drama exploring the rise of xenophobia in the country’s rural areas.
With Äppel A Bieren, Grevis explores the theme of grief through the story of Sofia, a young woman who sets off across Europe to honour the unfulfilled wishes of her late anti-conformist and idealist sister. Along the way, she gradually loses sight of herself as she takes on the mantle of her sister’s being.
As a tribute to life, the film explores the essence of empathy through this transfer of identity. Blending the road movie and coming-of-age genres, Äppel A Bieren is a story about the state of today’s youth and their place in our world. Above all, it is a film about commitment, sisterhood and coming to awareness.
