« La chose la plus courageuse qu’un danseur puisse faire, c’est vieillir. » Figure majeure du hip-hop canadien, Crazy Smooth part de cette phrase et d’une blessure intime – un genou qui flanche – pour affronter une question têtue, que la culture du battle apprend à taire : qu’est-ce qu’un b-boy qui ne fait plus de backflip ? Sur les beats ciselés de DJ Shash’U et le spoken word d’Alejandro Rodriguez, neuf interprètes – de l’aîné né en 1965 à la jeune garde – mettent breaking, popping et house à l’épreuve du temps. Battles, solos méditatifs et figures chorales se répondent et rendent un vibrant hommage aux pionnier·ère·s de la danse urbaine, tout en ravivant la mémoire de toute une communauté.

“It’s said that the bravest thing a dancer can do is grow old.” A major figure in Canadian hip-hop, Crazy Smooth draws on this phrase and a private injury – a buckling knee – to confront a nagging question that battle culture rarely names: What’s left of the b-boy when the backflip’s gone? To the razor-sharp beats of DJ Shash’U and the spoken word of Alejandro Rodriguez, nine dancers, from the elder born in 1965 to the youngest of the crew, put breaking, popping, and house to the test of time. Battles, meditative solos, and group formations echo one another, paying vibrant tribute to hip-hop’s pioneers while keeping alive the memory of a whole community.
